Welcome.Welcome to the home for writers. We talk about important matters for writers, news affecting writers, and the finer aspects of the writing craft. Upcoming AMA posts Before posting, check out:Here's a general synopsis and explanation of 's community rules.
Please keep these guidelines in mind for all of your posts and comments. The moderators do reserve the right to remove posts/comments that are deemed harmful without warning and ban users depending on the severity of the infraction.Want to do an AMA? Please to verify yourself before posting. Posts Must Be Related to the Craft of Writing:All submissions must be directly related to writing. Posts only tangentially related to writing are likely to be removed at moderator discretion. This includes, but is not limited to, posts asking questions about writing software or hardware and posts asking research questions for your book.
Such posts should be directed to the appropriate subreddit. Please note that posts asking for help with anxiety, depression, writer’s block, and similar problems are not questions about writing. Critique Prohibition:All requests for feedback, critique partners, beta readers, or any associated elements of work critique must be put in the Weekly Critique and Self-Promotion Thread. Individual threads asking for direct critique, even as minimal as a single line of dialogue, premise, characters, or plot, will be removed. Requests for feedback on story ideas or synopses will also be removed at moderator discretion.
Sharing Violation:Posts focused only on self-acknowledgement or life events are not allowed in individual threads. Sharing for the sake of sharing is not allowed outside the Weekly stickied threads.

This includes your own writing (when not seeking feedback and especially when seeking views or sales), personal blogs, publication acceptance or rejection, stories you really like, humorous images, and especially announcements about completed drafts (even if they're accompanied with 'things I learned' tips). If your post does not have actual questions related to writing, or otherwise primarily concerns personal matters, it is more likely to be removed at moderator discretion. If you believe you have a particular qualification that would lend well to an AMA, you should contact the moderator team to discuss the matter. Posts Must Not Lack Critical Info:All submissions must contain enough information to start a discussion on reddit. Vague or de minimis posts are likely to be removed at moderator discussion.

Similarly, posts asking for answers about simple and easily researched questions—or posts seeking feedback on premises/ideas for stories—are likely to be removed. Low-Quality Posts:In a similar vein, submissions which contain only a link or a title are likely to be removed even if they prompt a discussion. Further, posts that ask simple questions, questions that could easily be researched, or questions that are answered in the FAQ are likely to be removed. If you want to ask questions like these, you should use the Weekly Discussion and Question thread.

Comments to promote such things will be removed outside of the designated Critique and Self-Promotion thread. Solicitation for Work:Posts or comments which seek someone to do work for you or to do work for someone else (paid or unpaid) will be removed outside of the Weekly Critique and Self-Promotion thread unless they are requests for submissions which adhere to the guidelines below. Politics:All posts and comments which touch on political and cultural issues will be met with heightened scrutiny. Any post that is exclusively or primarily about political issues will be removed. Both the subreddit and the moderation team contain a variety of perspectives on political issues that are unlikely to be resolved through a tangential discussion about writing. Civility will be enforced, but spirited discourse can often blur the line between acceptable and unacceptable behavior. As a general guideline, comments and comment threads containing repeated insults or curses are disallowed, as is any advocacy in favor of bigotry. Keep general reddiquette in mind. Writing A Fiction Book
It launched me on a long binge of watching mini-series and movies, studying their plots and dramatic structure in light of McKee's theory. My writing style has been acclaimed as wonderful all my life, and I've written successfully as part of my job, and occasional non-fiction pieces, but I have great difficulty with plausible, exciting fiction plots for the novels I try to write.' Story' gave me a better perspective on how plot, character and style can work together.
Prose and cinematography/directing are the same thing. They are both the delivery vehicle and language of story. Hijacking top comment: while both of these are good, neither one will really force you to confront challenges and issues in your own writing except in a very general way.To make it three, I would add 'The Making of a Story' by Alice LaPlante. It is, by far, the absolute best book on writing I've ever read: it has small 'teaching' sections discussing certain concepts (metaphors, characters, voice, etc.) followed by exercises with examples, and then accompanied by a wonderful selection of short stories that really captures the best of that concept. It's a thick book with a lot of work if you do the exercises, but it's definitely worth it. It's like a DIY advanced college creative writing course, and it's helped me so, so much.
The author teaches at the MFA program at Stanford so she not only is a great writer, but also a great TEACHER, which distinguishes her from the other two books mentioned.Reddit apparently doesn't know about it, unfortunately, which is why I only very recently discovered it on an Amazon recommended books list! It really deserves a wider readership.Amazon link for the lazy:.
