It still has the things that to me are the Suikoden feel - castle-building, politics, strategy battles and hints of a larger picture. It's still a 'martial epic' to borrow the term used to describe the novels that inspired Suikoden, but the choice of main characters is awful (90% 16-year-olds, which I thought was lame even when I was 16) and as a result it takes longer to reach the high points of the story. As the others said - Go in not expecting much and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Go in expecting Suikoden 6 and you'll be disappointed.

I'm a huge Suikoden fan. I have all the games.

But I'll say that I was at first a bit irritated they they didn't stick to the timeline but now I'm happy as I'm 3/4th the way through the game. They had practically exhausted that timeline to the point where they would have to make up new lands and go really far into the future.

Teirkries did a good job making Suikoden quick and handheld. The surplus of cut-scenes were a welcome change. And they streamlined the trading system so it was actually possible to trade.though it was the only way to get new items and make money. I see references to Doki Doki Suikoden a lot, but I have still seen no proof Doki Doki Suikoden is related to the (Genso) Suikoden series in any way, shape or form (even as a parody).Suikoden, by itself, is just the Japanese pronunciation of Shui Hu Zhuan, which is referred to most often as here. When Genso Suikoden was created, they shortened the name to Suikoden when it was localized, since nobody would know what it meant anyway. In fact, Bandit Kings of Ancient China (old Koei game) was called Suikoden: Tenmei no Chikai in Japan, since it's based on the same subject. It's a fairly popular subject matter in Japan and China, although we see few of the releases.tl;dr Both are inspired by an old book that had 108 protagonists.

There's no other relation (thankfully). Download pitbull give me everything tonight mp3 free. Huh, that's fascinating.

I've never read about these, although I'm aware of Gensou's meaning in the name. I'm sure they're at least a partial inspiration.I know that the overall plot and specific events (drugging with tea, the luring of Lepant with his sword, and using fire spears to defeat Teo's cavalry) are all pretty much straight out of Water Margin. The treatment of the Emperor who is inherently wise, but has been corrupted by a close adviser (Gao Qiu vs. Windy) is also a common theme. I'm not sure if the ukiyo-e contain those levels of detail. What makes it more interesting to me (and more indicative that they're inspired by the novel itself) is that Suikoden 2 has the same clear inspiration from Romance of the Three Kingdom - with locations, characters and event flow clearly derived from it (Luca Blight's name is even quite similar to Lu Bu, although Japanese pronunciation muddles that part of the theory a bit).Suikoden III onwards don't seem to have any clear inspiration - but maybe that's because the series' producer was no longer involved partway through the game.

Hmmmm the thing is most of the characters even in the new game do seem to try to fit into one of the 108 star slots meaning they are suppose to represent the corresponding character. Wow I'm impresed that you not only like Suikoden (I have only met two other people face to face and a handful online) but actually know the history behind the game and the Water Margin. Are you Chinese or Japanese?

Sorry that was rude to ask. Either way hats off to you. You alone support why I go to reddit to have actual intellectual discussion and not other sites.

Yeah, the 108 star slots have been a constant. That part's definitely still Water Margin, but the flow/story of 1 follows Water Margin much more closely than the rest (I haven't done the mapping out like I have with 2, but I think even the locations may follow WM's).I'm neither Chinese or Japanese (mostly nordic), I just was totally grabbed by the San Guo when I played Destiny of an Emperor many years ago. After years trying to hunt it down, finally got a copy right around the time I played Suikoden. Water Margin was partially written (most likely completed) by the same author, so I've read that one a couple times and noticed tons of similarities.I likewise have only met one person who's read SGYY and WM (he actually recommended WM to me). I've convinced a couple friends to play Suikoden, though.

Sometime I should really visit Suikosource or something, but I pretty much just hang out on Reddit and smaller forums. Thanks for the kind words, the feeling is mutual sir:).
